On Saturday March 27, a British social worker filed a police complaint at the Laxman Jhoola police alleging that she has been raped by 2 men-one, a foreigner and the second one being an Indian from Mumbai.

The Uttaranchal police, while denying that there was any interference or pressure from the British high commission for registering the complaint, said that the lady left for Delhi after refusing a medical checkup. Furthermore, she declined to appear before a magistrate for her statement to be recorded.

This incident is not the first occurrence of its type. Last year, a similar allegation of rape by a women foreigner traveller against a fellow foreigner traveller was done, which subsequently was found to be baseless.

Rishikesh is one of the most preferred destinations in India due to its popularity as a destination of spirituality, ashrams, yoga, the river Ganges, meditation, cooler climes and its ease of reach from Delhi-the gateway to India. Rishikesh is highly recommended in all guide books as a must visit place. Hence, a huge number of travellers make a beeline for it.

Lest this worry our visitors to India, we hasten to add that travelling on your own in India is mostly safe. This is well supported by the huge numbers of and couple women travellers to India especially from Europe. However, to safeguard one’s self it is important to know the possible causes of it and the simple precautions that can be taken.

One common reason is that compared to most Indians, the single female traveller is financially much better off. So she often can be recipient of unabashed vigourous male attention. Women who have a hectic life style back home, without a companion, can easily let their guards down under the influence of the warmth of such an appreciative admiring attention. These women realise much later, many times with a shattered heart, that it was their purse that was of more interest to their beaus, rather than themselves.

In many non-urban areas of India with the encouraging approval of the whole family, it is a way of life for many young men to either first try to romantically ensnare the young unsuspecting ladies or if failing in this, then engage them with their families as the daughter of the house.

Either way, all this for some how try and convert these women into a lifelong ATM. There are many heart rendering sad tales of such tourist widows /daughters /sisters. Be careful of such undiluted attention and its ensuing sob story.

It is not unusual to see such couples in India. Spotting of such couples embolden many financially challenged young Indian men to try their luck. You can possibly be a victim of such a scam.

Nowadays India is also slowly becoming a destination for sex tourism. Though not as rampant as in Kenya, one can occasionally spot older western women travelling around in India with younger Indian companion.

Such occurrences can mislead and often does mislead young Indian men into believing that this is an easy life – worth pursuing. To implement this plan, the first step obviously is developing friendship, then intimacy; and if this does not go as per plan, it may end up in a bitter experience of molestation.

Of course there are simple cases of robberies which can happen due to carelessness and false bravado on the part of the traveller. To avoid these happenings, consider buying an Indian outfit plus avoid visiting bad neighbourhoods.

Finally you can of course avoid such nuisance by hiring a tour company to arrange your India travel.

The name Rajasthan is self- explanatory as it reflects the meaning ‘Land of Rajas’; located in the north-west of India. It is surrounded by enduring Aravallis ranges on one hand and the distinctive Thar Desert on the other. The state of Rajasthan was formed in 1956 but its reference is found both in Ramayana and Mahabharata.

It mystifies the audiences who specifically visit the land to see in reality what they have read in books about king and their subjects, and lifestyle in the imposing and monumental forts and palaces.

The warrior class Rajput of the 6th and 7th century can easily be compared with European Knights. The legends of their valour are as old as 12th century; and they share their lineage with Kshatriyas, the combatant class that came to power in Vedic times. The arid zone of Great Indian Desert throbs with life when the multi-hued spruced population comes together to celebrate life in the form of fairs harvest celebration or religious occasions marked for deity. This culture dates back to antiquity; it is for this reason the architecture, arts and crafts, songs, dress-code, palaces and forts are facsimiles of tradition of the land.

Its symmetrical balconies were specifically designed for ladies viewing in privacy and the building garners a high souvenir value.

Jaisalmer a bastion city in the heart of the desert state is enriched with yellow sandstone rhythmic architectural monuments. Jaisalmer Fort is the oldest one you will see in the state. Jodhpur or the blue city is fortified with 10 km stretch of stone wall on a sandstone hill. Inside, rests the well protected Mehrangarh fort, which never fails to mesmerize tourists. Udaipur, the jewel of the state, was under the Sisodia rule for 1200 years. Its City Palace highlights include an interior decor of mirror work and ivory inter-spaced inlay work that cannot be described in words. The Peacock Courtyard of the palace is quite charming.

A more comprehensive Historical Tour to Rajasthan also offers you a glimpse into the history of Bhil and Mina tribes and races, who are believed to be the earliest settlers here. It was only around 1400 BC that Aryans (or the Rajputs) made way to this land. The Classic Golden Triangle Route of Northern India

One of the shortest and most popular tourist circuits including the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ fame Taj Mahal has been affectionately dubbed as the Golden Triangle. For those who have a fairly limited amount of time to spend in North India, the three tips of the Golden Triangle route – Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur – includes several renowned sights with distinctive flavor and unique historical delights. The Golden Triangle itinerary typically begins and ends in Delhi, the capital of India. Several popular Indian and Rajasthan tours cover the Golden Triangle circuit along with other add-ons based on the theme and duration of the tour.

Usually most Golden Triangle tours are a week long though longer tours that include other prominent destinations can be much longer. Delhi has one of the busiest international airports in India and Golden Triangle seekers usually find it a befitting place to start their tour. Delhi has been the seat of political turmoil in India since 13th century and it is said to be the Indraprastha, empire of Pandavas of the famous epic Mahabharata. Today, it encompasses seven cities. Foreigners are enchanted by the architectural magnificence of Moghuls on display at the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Humayun’s Tomb. The rickshaw ride in the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk seem outlandish to Westerners who are awed by the range of products, including handicrafts, footwear, and delicacies available here.

Lutyen’s Delhi or New Delhi is well planned with wide roads and splendid European architecture with quite a few highlights such as the India Gate, the Rashtrapati Bhawan or the President’s House, Mughal Gardens (opened for only a few days in February), and Raj Ghat, the memorial of Mahatama Gandhi. Qutub Minar may not be the highest pillar here anymore but still has a rugged charm enhanced by more ancient structures such as Iron Pillar of Mehrauli that has weathered a number of centuries without being rusted.

The next stopover in the Golden Triangle circuit is Agra, the city of marble wonder Taj. Pictures do not do justice to the intricate artwork and outstanding workmanship manifested in Taj Mahal. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal, the semi-precious stones used here include coral, agate, amethyst, sardonyx, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, and turquoise. Agra Fort is the predecessor of Delhi’s Red Fort where you can see the place where Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in his last days. It is said that Shah Jahan used to see Taj Mahal and mourn for his wife until the day of his death.

Jaipur, the third tip of the Golden Triangle, is the capital of Rajasthan and is also known as the Pink City. The city has extremely wide avenues fit for royal elephant parades and large plazas built around Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds. The honeycomb facade of Hawa Mahal is a beautiful architectural piece designed especially for royal ladies. Hawa Mahal was naturally air-conditioned and royal ladies could see the parades through its facade without being seen. The magnificent Amber Fort, the royal City Palace and the royal observatory Jantar Mantar are other highlights of Jaipur. The Golden Triangle tour consolidates the best of Northern Indian itineraries for you.
